Trump Speaks to Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir Amid Hormuz Tensions; Says He Will “Consider” Concerns

New Delhi: U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone conversation with Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir regarding rising tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.

According to a Pakistani security source, Munir told Trump that if the blockade in the Hormuz region continues, it would be difficult to move forward with talks involving Iran. In response, Trump said he would “think about it” and consider the concerns raised.

Background of the Crisis

The situation has escalated after the United States imposed a naval blockade near Iranian waters. In retaliation, Iran reportedly closed the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, a critical global oil shipping route.

Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have intensified due to Trump’s warnings toward Tehran and the reported seizure of an Iranian vessel named “Tooska.” Iran has condemned the move as “maritime piracy” and warned of a response.

Uncertainty Over U.S.–Iran Talks

Amid rising tensions, uncertainty looms over whether a second round of talks between the U.S. and Iran will take place in Pakistan. Iran has stated that the U.S. naval blockade violates ceasefire understandings and that Washington’s aggressive stance is worsening the situation, making negotiations unlikely under current conditions.

However, according to reports citing sources, discussions—if they occur—could extend over several days. Efforts are being made to reach a temporary agreement (MoU) that could extend the ceasefire by around 60 days, allowing time to work toward a broader peace deal. This would depend on Iran’s participation.

Key Developments in the Last 24 Hours

  • Firing on Indian Ships: Iranian forces reportedly fired at two Indian vessels in the Hormuz region. Out of 14 ships stopped, 13 were later allowed to leave. India summoned the Iranian ambassador to lodge a protest.
  • Hormuz Closed Again: Iran has once again shut the Strait, accusing the U.S. of violating ceasefire terms.
  • Talks in Doubt: Iran has refused to attend the second round of peace talks in Islamabad, citing U.S. demands and the blockade.
  • Oil Prices Surge: Global oil prices jumped sharply, with Brent crude rising about 6.5% to $96.27 per barrel amid the crisis.
  • Trump’s Warning: Trump stated that this is Iran’s “last chance” for a peace agreement and said he would not repeat the mistakes of former President Barack Obama.

The situation remains highly volatile, with global economic and geopolitical implications tied closely to developments in the Strait of Hormuz.
